Jodhpur is known as the “Sun City” for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all the year round. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. Jodhpur is also known as “Blue City” for the blue colour on the houses in the old city area. However, the city has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades. Jodhpur lies near the geographic centre of Rajasthan state, which makes it a convenient base for travel in a region much frequented by tourists.

PLACES TO SEE

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India. Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. The museum in the fort is one of the well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. There is a selection of old royal palanquins, including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin which was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730. The museum exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms.

The Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph & built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in 1899 in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and serves as the burial ground for the rulers of Marwar. The cenotaph’s grounds feature carved gazebos, a tiered garden, and a small lake. There are three other cenotaphs in the grounds. The cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh displays portraits of the rulers and Maharajas of Jodhpur.

Balsamand Lake is a popular picnic spot, built in 1159 AD by Gurjara-Pratihara rulers. It was designed as a water reservoir to provide water to Mandore. The lake has a length of one km, breadth of 50 m and a depth of 15 m.There is a Palace was built later as a summer palace on its shore. The lake is surrounded by lush green gardens that house groves of trees like mango, papaya, pomegranate, guava and plum. Animals and birds like the jackal and peacock also call this place home.

Ghanta Ghar, also known as the clock tower of Jodhpur.It was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh (1880-1911) from whom the market takes it name. In fact, the tower dominates the entire scenario. It’s a 70 mm cinemascope with unknown and faceless humans in the lead roles for many tourists, most of whom are filming it live.

Kaylana Lake is an artificial lake, built by Pratap Singh in 1190. The lake spreads over an area of 84 km. The lake is situated between igneous rock land formations. It receives its water from Hati Nehar (elephant canal), and various migratory birds such as Siberian cranes are seen here in the winter season. Jodhpur and all the surrounding towns and villages depend on Kaylana lake as a source of drinking water

The Umaid Bhavan Palace Museum is highly recommended for its display of items ranging from weapons to an array of stuffed leopards to antiques to some fascinating crockery to various trophies. Also exhibited is a huge banner presented by Queen Victoria and an amazing collection of clocks. it has elegant murals and also substantial number of miniature paintings, armour and an unusual collection of household paraphernalia that was in vogue in the 1930.
