Chittorgarh is located on the banks of river Gambhiri and Berach (a Tributary of Banas). The history of this town is written in Blood and Sacrifice .Chittorgarh, the garh(fort) at chittor, is the greatest in India, and is well worth reshuffling an itinerary to explore. It rise from the plains like a huge rock island, nearly 6 Km long and surrounded on all sides by 150m plus cliffs. It is a World Heritage Site is also well-known for its wildlife parks like Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sita Mata Sanctuary.

PLACES TO SEE

Chittorgarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India, is a World Heritage Site. The fort precinct with an evocative history is studded with a series of historical palaces, gates, temples and two prominent commemoration towers. These monumental ruins have inspired the imagination of tourists and writers for centuries. The fort represents the quintessence of tribute to the nationalism, courage, medieval chivalry and sacrifice exhibited by the Mewar rulers of Sisodia and their kinsmen and women and children, between the 7th and 16th centuries.

Vijay Stambha and Kirti Stambha is a huge nine storey tower which was built by Maharana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over the Muslim rulers of Malwa and Gujarat in 1440. The tower is 122 ft high and stands on a 10 ft high base. There are sculptures and carvings on the exterior walls of the tower. The tower is visible from any section of the town below. And from the tower top after climbing 157 steps, there is a great view of the surroundings. The inside walls of the tower are carved with images of Gods, weapons, etc

The Meera temple Chittorgarh was built during Rana Kumbha’s reign near to Kumbha Palace. He was the one who patronized the temple. It is a perfect temple located in a place that has a deep rooted association with the rich history of Rajasthan. Though most of the tourists visiting the place are attracted by its rich history but presence of this famous temple adds a new dimension to Chittorgarh tour packages. On visiting the temple, you will be able to see the carved statue of the five human bodies and one head. This statue is a manifestation of the fact that there is no division on the basis of caste and creed.

The Ratan Singh Palace is attributed to Rana Ratan Singh II (AD 1528 – 31). Located along the Ratneshwar Talab; it is rectangular on plan and enclosed by a high wall. The main entrance is facing east through a lofty arch crowned with two pillared chhatris. The palace comprises of courtyards surrounded by rooms, towers, deorhis, etc. A temple known as Ratneshwar Mahadeva Temple is on the north of the main gateway, which comprises of a garbhagriha, an antarala and a mandapa. The exterior of the temple is beautifully carved.

Fateh Prakash Palace is an epitome of modern architecture. Housing an idol of Lord Ganesh, along with a fountain, and found here and there are an array of wall paintings and murals. It is now popular as a Museum of Rajput history, and the architecture is breathtaking just like all the other historical forts and palaces in Rajasthan. Sculptures, paintings, historical arte facts etc. are found in abundance in the museum, and it is quite an attraction for tourists.

Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary One of the lesser known Wildlife Sanctuaries around the state situated 30 km. from Chittorgarh; has a mysterious charm that waits to be unraveled. Housing a large variety of animals like Fox, Hyena, Panther, Jackal, Crocodile, Cheetal, Porcupine, Wild Boar, Langur ad Hare, the place is also a tertiary home to many migratory birds like Cranes and Pelicans during winter months. Also has the Orasi and Bassi Dams included in its area, which make for a pleasing sight.
